Brilliance in Every Direction.- old

Altura is a vibrant, 55+ age-restricted community located in the Rincon Valley in the foothills of the Rincon Mountains, just east of Tucson, near the Saguaro National Park East in Tucson, Arizona. The 169-acre, 251 home community is comprised of residents from Arizona and across the U.S. and world. Two-thirds of residents are full-time, and represent a wide range of professional backgrounds and interests with no intention of retiring from life.

The community was founded in the 1990s by former University of Arizona president, Henry Koffler and his development partner, Lloyd Lewis, who envisioned a community where residents could live harmoniously with the desert and remain invigorated through life-long learning, the arts and volunteer work.

Henry was aware of the problem of retiring professionals, who were engaged in active careers, and then suddenly faced a lack of no longer belonging or growing after retirement.

Henry believed a community designed to bring together individuals with intellectual curiosity in a stimulating environment would foster their continued involvement and personal growth. Koeffler also believed the availability of a wellness program and supportive health care would help residents enjoy a healthful lifestyle. The combination of these features would serve as a national model for creative and productive retirement.

Community Overview

Altura is home to the Academy Village Campus, a multi-building complex located at the heart of the community, which encompasses the Community Center, the Academy Villas and the Arizona Senior Academy (ASA).

Lifelong Learning at The Arizona Senior Academy

The Arizona Senior Academy is Southern Arizona’s premier adult education and outreach program affiliated with the University of Arizona. The ASA was established to ensure that active engagement with civic life, intellectual stimulation and cultural enrichment could continue throughout retirement.

The ASA hosts approximately 15 events per month, including weekly lectures and seminars about a wide range of topics, such as history, music, politics, medical innovations, astronomy and business. The ASA also hosts world-class concerts ranging from jazz and classical to theatrical performances.

The ASA also encourages individual and group outreach efforts allowing members to share their time and talents for the greater good.
